WHO WE ARE

The Foster Foundation is at the forefront of orthopaedic trauma care, combining evidence-based practice with cutting-edge research. The Foothills Medical Centre Orthopaedic Trauma Service is comprised of 7 orthopaedic surgeons who are leaders in trauma education, research, innovation, and multi-disciplinary collaboration.

VISION

To provide surgical excellence and innovation through research and education in order to continually enhance the quality of trauma care on a global scale.

MISSION

To be leaders in patient-informed research in order to improve outcomes after injury by providing evidence-based orthopaedic trauma care and education through collaboration within an integrated trauma system and our community.

GOAL

To transform our vision into impactful reality, leaving a lasting legacy in our field.

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

The members of the Foster Foundation and the Foothills Orthopaedic Trauma Service are highly trained trauma surgeons who provide evidence-based care for acute single limb and polytraumatized patients. We provide tertiary care for subacute complex peri-articular injuries, nonunions, and malunions for southern British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Our expertise, coordinated multi-disciplinary care, and patient-informed research has led us to be leaders in Canadian trauma care excellence

EDUCATION

Our orthopaedic trauma fellowship program is recognized as a premier surgical training program that produces highly skilled surgeons, while emphasizing a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care and active participation in research and education. Our high-volume of critically injured patients, combined with a focus on research excellence, ensures that graduates from our fellowship translate their knowledge and skills directly into improving patient outcomes globally.

RESEARCH

Our research portfolio focuses on developing novel surgical techniques and a precision medicine approach for optimizing patient outcomes post-injury. Our innovative research is directly impacting patient outcomes and advancing the field of orthopaedic trauma. For example, we are critically appraising the use of thrombelastography (TEG) for individualized risk assessment and thromboprophylaxis prescription for the prevention of blood clots after injury. Our biomechanics research evaluates novel surgical techniques, such as dual plating for upper extremity fractures to allow immediate weight bearing, and informs transformational clinical research.

INNOVATION

Our innovative approach promotes improved education and healthcare delivery models. For example, the POWER (Preventing Osteoporosis With Early Recognition) program demonstrates a personalized approach to fragility fracture prevention to address critical healthcare challenges, improve patient care, and create cost savings. Our novel surgical training through immersive simulated operative experiences promotes life-long surgical education and excellence.

COLLABORATION

Our dedication to supporting underserved populations and addressing societal needs is evident in our collaborations with local, national, and international organizations, including FearIsNotLove and Team Broken Earth. Our goal is to improve the patient experience, reduce the global burden of trauma, and create lasting impact within our surgical community and beyond.
